Paper and Print

Updated: 2012-04-10 | Print

Market demands for improved and new paper qualities and the papermakers' requests for higher margins and cost-effective production processes are important driving forces in PFI research activities.

It is important to understand the effect of raw materials and production processes on paper quality properties like strength, appearance and print quality. Detailed paper characterisation is an important tool in reaching this understanding. In order to improve product quality, we must also understand how important paper parameters influence critical quality factors and the paper-ink interactions. Hence, our main areas of interest are:

  • Effect of furnish properties and process conditions on paper properties
  • Chemical and structural analyses of paper
  • Print quality analysis and modelling
  • Assessment of printability and understand the mechanisms governing printability
  • Benchmarking of printing paper
