Second generation wood fibre composites

The project was finalized in 2008, and focused on developing natural-filler (wood powder and wood fibre) based composites with comparable or better mechanical performance than conventional composite materials in a cost-effective manner.

The challenges of feeding low-density wood powder/fibres into the polymer matrix by extruder-based processing were overcome by pelletization. By using wood fibres instead of wood powder as reinforcing material, an improvement in mechanical properties was observed.

 

The project was partly funded by the Research Council of Norway, and was a cooperation between partners from industry, institutes and universities.
