Development of novel, sustainable barrier fiber based packaging materials is an important issue in PFI's research on future packaging concepts.
A package shall provide protection of both content and environment. It shall prevent damage, spoilage and reduction of waste of the product.
Wood fibers present in paper and board provide strength and structure to the packaging. Fibre-based packaging has some major advantages as compared to other packaging materials, being sustainable, renewable, biodegradable and recyclable.
For food packaging the product protection is vital. Hence, important characteristics include resistance to internal and external influences as well as good barrier properties for gases, oxygen, humidity and water.
Paperbased packaging offers both mechanical strength and flexibility. However, due to its poor original barrier properties, it needs to be combined with other materials to obtain a suitable barrier.
